In contrast, chronic pain serves no useful purpose, is\nusually out of proportion to an injury or pathology, and may\npersist long after healing is complete. A recent National\nSurvey indicated that 3.9 million Canadians (17%) over the age of\n15 have chronic pain. Neuropathic pain generally falls under the\numbrella of chronic pain and affects 2-3% of the population in\nNorth America. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that\n70% of individuals suffering from chronic pain is rated as\nmoderate to severe enough to interfere with normal daily\nactivities and can last for months to years. Consequently,\nchronic pain imposes a significant burden on society by diminishing\nthe quality of life of patients and their families and also has an\nenormous impact on healthcare costs, and other expenditures\npredicted to be over $150 billion annually in the US. However,\ntreatment of neuropathic pain is particularly challenging for\nphysicians, as this pain does not respond well to treatment. In\nthe current research proposal, we will investigate the potential\nof a novel target (delta opioid receptors) for treating neuropathic\npain.", "3 yrs 0 mth", "https://webapps.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/decisions/p/project_details.html?applId=170640&lang=en"]], "columns": ["external_id", "title", "project_lead_name", "co_researchers", "institution", "province", "country", "competition_year", "award_amount", "program", "program_type", "theme", "research_subject", "keywords", "abstract", "duration", "source_url"], "primary_keys": ["external_id"], "primary_key_values": ["170640"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.5367799967643805}
